Show me the light? Light pollution and sources of night sky brightness

Hi all,
we continue our series of public presentations. This time the theme is light pollution. The Astronomers' enemy No. 1:-) Please mark your calendars.

ABSTRACT by the speaker:
Countless lights that illuminate our streets, houses and other infrastructures leak some of their light to the night sky. Mapping and monitoring these light sources and their emissions are important for proposing and controlling lighting regulations. Most light emission reduction measures have been focused on street lighting, but perhaps we are missing the big picture when focusing only on these lighting type?
To answer this question we recently launched a new project called “Nachtlicht-BüHNE” where citizen scientists will create an app for mapping outdoor lighting sources using a co-design process. This talk will give an overview of this project. I will also present an analysis of Globe at Night data, and aim to convince you of the importance of taking part. In order to enhance participation in 2020, we propose a global campaign for observations in March, 2020.

ABOUT the speaker:
Helga (@Helsche https://twitter.com/Helsche) is a geo-ecologist with a focus on remote sensing/GIS, working for the GeoForschungsZentrum and as a freelancer for NGOs like WWF in the field of nature conservation. She started studying light pollution with her thesis about the distribution of night time lights in the city of Berlin (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0034425712003203). She works closely with Citizen Scientist and hopes to rise awareness of the impact of artificial night at light.

It would be nice to donate 2€ to the space (price to get a drink), as we are getting it for free.

As usual, after the event we may head for a drink to further discuss with the speaker.

Doors open at 7:15pm. Thanks and see you soon!
