Urban Dialogues | From the Old to the New Rome • Paolo Girardelli
This month, as part of our inspiring Urban Dialogues series, we welcome architectural historian Paolo Girardelli, an expert in the cultural evolution of cities and the cross-cultural dynamics of the Eastern Mediterranean. Girardelli will discuss the traces of Rome in İstanbul in several epochs: similarities, echoes and parallel developments. The event will take place at İskele on Friday, December 13th, at 19.00.

Paolo Girardelli completed his PhD at the University of Naples in 1996. His work focuses on European, Levantine, and non-Muslim presence in late Ottoman cities. Girardelli served as an Aga Khan Fellow at MIT in 2005-06, a visiting researcher at INHA (Institut national de l’histoire de l’art) in Paris in 2013, Senior Fellow at Koç University ANAMED in 2015-16, and as a visiting professor at UNC Chapel Hill in 2018-19. His publications and graduate seminars concentrate on the relationship between space, diplomacy, religion, and social identities in the multicultural context of the Eastern Mediterranean. Girardelli has also contributed significantly to the development of graduate programs in Art and Architecture History and Visual Culture at Boğaziçi University since 2000. His dedication to fostering academic communities focused on the spatial and cultural dynamics of the Eastern Mediterranean is reflected in his role as a founding member and academic committee chair of the Levantine Cultural Heritage Preservation Association (LKMKD). As a member of Italy ICOMOS and expert member of PRERICO (International Committee on Religious and Ritual Spaces), he has worked on various projects aiming for UNESCO World Heritage designation. He co-edited the book Italian Architects and Builders in the Ottoman Empire and Modern Turkey with Ezio Godoli. For his contributions to cultural relations between Italy and Turkey, he was honored with the Star of Italy Order in 2016.
