Kubernetes does all the boring yet critical tasks like horizontal scaling and zero down-time deployments, but what about more complex tasks like database sharding and agent registration? Kubernetes operators are capable of automating complex tasks, reducing the human factor even more. The barrier to entry is not as high as you think!
An Operator is a piece of software that manages an application deployed within Kubernetes. Operators are typically deployed within Kubernetes and they utilise Kubernetes APIs to both deploy and manage Kubernetes applications from their lifecycle management to scalability and state preservation.
Come and join me in this talk where I will be giving an introduction to Kubernetes Operators using the Operator Framework. The Operator Framework allows us to create Kubernetes Operators with an ease of use backed by the best practices that significantly lowers the barrier to entry to running your application in a Kubernetes environment. Operators become an enabler for onboarding a new developer to Kubernetes and in this talk, operators will be compared to other approaches like controllers. This talk will also give some information about the alternative technologies that can be used to create what’s called an operator and there will be a live coding demo where an introductory operator will be created, deployed and used to manage an introductory application.
