We’ll meet up at the Dunkin’ on the corner—3102 36th Avenue—right at 12:15 PM on Saturday, April 26th. As we gather, coffee in hand, the afternoon light will start to settle over Astoria. There will be warm greetings, casual chatter, and that relaxed weekend energy as we catch up before heading to the exhibit.
Once we’ve all arrived, we’ll make the short walk down 36th Avenue to 3601, where the gallery is located. There’ll be a shared sense of curiosity in the air—excitement to see the work of Gregory Garcia, a local visual artist whose reputation is starting to ripple through the neighborhood.
Inside, we’ll be welcomed by Garcia’s lush, evocative watercolors. His work—full of soft light, vibrant forest scenes, and urban energy—will draw us in. We’ll take our time with each piece, noticing the interplay between the natural landscapes of Trinidad and Tobago and the cityscapes of New York. His portraits will hold our attention, capturing not just faces, but feeling.
We’ll reflect on his influences—Monet, Renoir, Friedrich, and Shishkin—clearly present in the gentle diffusion of light and depth of emotion in his paintings. And yet, Garcia’s work will feel uniquely his own: sophisticated, layered, and full of life.
Some of us will pause longer at certain pieces, trading thoughts about how a painting reminds us of a hike, or a place we’ve traveled, or simply a feeling we can’t quite name. We’ll take in the photo-book TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO PICTURESQUE DIGITAL SCINTILLA, his digital tribute to the scenic beauty of his homeland. It will add another dimension to the experience—landscapes and seascapes frozen in time, but brimming with movement.
