Two Presentations in Astrophysics

Ingrid and Anna are two young Astrophysicists currently working in Potsdam. Each will present to us a different topic in Astronomy.

TALK 1 ABSTRACT:
In this talk I will take you on a journey through the life and death of stars. I will explain the physics behind the evolution of a star, all the way from the main sequence –- where our Sun currently is –- to the final white dwarf phase. Finally, I will comment on how we can learn more about all these processes by modelling the population of white dwarfs, and show you my contributions to this field.
(30 min, Ingrid)

TALK 2 ABSTRACT:
Our place in the Universe, the Milky Way, is a disk galaxy composed of billions of stars. It can also be identified as the hazy band of light seen in the night sky. It is only in our Galaxy that we are able to make detailed observations about the individual stars that compose it. In this talk we show what we know about the structure, evolution, and composition of the Milky Way, we also describe a powerful tool that can determine ages, distances, masses, and extinctions for individual stars, allowing a more precise study of our Galaxy.
(30 min, Anna)

You can ask some questions at the end of each talk, while there is plenty of time to discuss at the end of the event.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:
Ingrid is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Potsdam, Germany. Her main research interests are white dwarf and subdwarf stars, especially if they originated in binaries. Extra points if they are eclipsing. When she is not sciencing, she enjoys watching sci-fi and fantasy series and drinking good beer.

Anna is a PhD student at the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam, in the Milky Way and local volume research group, working with Dr. Cristina Chiappini since september 2018. She completed her Msc and Bsc degrees at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande Sul, Porto-Alegre Brazil.

NOTES:
a) This event is kostenlos, but I'd kindly ask you to get a beer or drink from the fridge (2€), to support the co.up space.
