WAMM's moving home!
Join us at our new home - www.facebook.com/groups/127579974553212
What do you mean WAMM is moving?
On 1st November WAMM is moving from Meetup to Facebook groups. Our new site will be www.facebook.com/groups/127579974553212
Why is this happening?
Meetup are increasing their fees by double to approximately £500 a year.
This change is not being advertised to Meetup organisers in advance.
At the same time Meetup features are gradually being eroded, it is becoming harder and buggier to operate a group on Meetup.
Meetup is no longer owned by it's original owners, has been sold more than once recently and seems to be moving in a new direction.
When is it happening?
WAMM is moving on 1st November.
All events scheduled for after this date will move to the new site.
How is WAMM funded?
WAMM used to be able to fund itself by taking a tiny percentage of all payments that people paid for events to pay the Meetup fees.
Meetup changed the way that they process payments a couple of years ago. The cost to WAMM and our members to process payments through Meetup is now prohibitive.
For the last couple of years, the Meetup fees have been covered by the group owner. This is now unable to continue with the increase in costs and reduction in features and support.
Why can't we donate to stay on Meetup?
Although we probably have enough donations pledged to cover funding for one year, it is usually much harder to secure funding for further years. Several business owners did kindly offered to sponsor some of the costs.
If people donate or sponsor, but we do not make the full amount, there is the issue of attempting to refund or appropriately use donations.
Meetup have not be transparent about the current price rises and they may not be able future rises.
There have been reductions in the Meetup features that the group use, the site has become more buggy and it is hard to edit events or the group except via laptop/desktop.
What changes will I see?
The group and it's events are continuing as before, they will just be listed on a new site.
What advantages are there to the move?
All members can list events - you won't need to wait to be approved.
Facebook has huge reach, is already widely used by members. Most members will be able to switch to the new site with minimum difficulty.
It is also free!
I don't have or want the Facebook app?
On a laptop you can go straight to www.facebook.com/groups/127579974553212
On a mobile use m.facebook.com/groups/127579974553212
There is no need to use the wider Facebook site or app - all events, discussion and photos will be visible on the group.
I thought the group was moving to Kommunity?
Several event hosts and members have been trialing a WAMM Kommunity. However, in testing we have run into several bugs and issues and some members have expressed concerns about moving to an unknown app with a small audience.
