What is backup and disaster recovery?
Backup and disaster recovery are crucial elements of data management and contingency planning for businesses and individuals.
Backup involves creating copies of important files, data, or systems to prevent data loss in case of accidental deletion, hardware failure, or cyber attacks. These duplicates are stored separately from the original data, usually in different locations or on distinct storage devices, ensuring their availability for retrieval if needed.
Disaster recovery, on the other hand, encompasses the processes and strategies employed to restore data, applications, and IT infrastructure after a major disruptive event. Disasters such as natural calamities, cyber-attacks, or system failures can severely impact operations, making it imperative to have comprehensive recovery plans. These plans typically involve backup data utilization, system restoration, and continuity measures to minimize downtime and swiftly return to normalcy.
Both backup and disaster recovery are integral for mitigating risks, safeguarding against data loss, and maintaining operational resilience in the face of unforeseen events.
