TOPIC
LaTeX for Scientists and Engineers (Sat, 22nd Oct, 1630 hrs).
MOTIVATION
LaTeX is a typesetting software system for document preparation.
LaTeX is widely used in academia for the communication and publication of scientific documents, papers in many fields and in authoring books.
When working with LaTeX, the author uses markup tagging conventions to define the general structure of a document to stylise text throughout a document (such as bold and italics), and to add citations and cross-references. The TeX file is then processed using the TeX Live or MiKTeX program to produce the DVI or PDF file.
FOCUS
In this HANDS-ON session, we will focus on three important aspects related to LaTeX.
A1
- Components of a LaTeX based document
- General structure and layout
- Using the LaTeX toolchain to produce a PDF document.
A2
- Next we move on to discuss about STY files, which are usually provided by publishers of papers and books.
- Integrate ACM sty file in a paper
- Using the LaTeX toolchain to produce a camera ready paper for ACM
A3
- Finally, we discuss about structuring a LaTeX document suitable for a book
- We use the publisher kit from Addison Wesley for a book.
- Using the LaTeX toolchain to produce a PDF version of a AW styled and structured book.
SOFTWARE
You must have TeXLive distribution installed on your system. The rest of the artifacts will be provided as part of the session.
