About

Bio :

İbrahim Gürses graduated from Bilkent University Computer Science Department in 2011.He has 6 years of expertise in software development with the architectural design of Enterprise Java web applications. He is a fan open-source technologies. Right now, he is working on the development of cloud native infrastructure for home appliances as a member of cloud team in Arçelik.

Abstract :

One of the big trends of 2016 was the rise of “serverless” application architectures. The most visible one was AWS’s Lambda product, but Microsoft has Azure Functions, and Google has Cloud Functions. But what about organisations that want serverless but must run their IT on-premises? Cloud services are not a feasible solution for some businesses, often due to regulatory limitations and saving data on-premise. Also, many organisations are afraid of vendor lock-in problems due to high coupling between our code and underlying platforms and due to high-level abstraction and black box implementations mostly developers do not know what happens under the hood. In this talk, I will talk about the core parts of a serverless platform and how hard is it to implement it by ourselves with the current container technologies. I will also briefly talk about community implementations for the serverless such as OpenLambda and community-driven open specification efforts for standardization serverless computing like FaaSlang. Finally, I will give a demo of the most popular and production ready on-premise solution out there: Apache OpenWhisk.

In the demo, I will walk through the installation of Apache OpenWhisk, run a simple serverless app on it and share my experiences with you.

Schedule:
